Abstract
Multilevel modeling (MLM) has become a common approach in education and psychology to address violations of observation independence that occur when examining clustered (nested) data. Although several advances have been made using MLM over the years, there are several misconceptions as well that are related to its use. I discuss some of these misconceptions (e.g., centering, using model-based vs robust standard errors), provide examples, and explain ways to address these.
